Four Spots, by Probability
- Joints and hoses (most common): aged tape or gaskets — re-tape or replace, a 10-minute DIY.
- Relief valve: occasional drips while heating are normal; continuous flow means debris — flush via the lever or replace the valve.
- Heating flange: aged seal — drain the tank and swap the gasket; professional job.
- Tank leak: rusty, spreading damp at the bottom means a perforated tank — retire the unit.
DIY or Service
Gaskets and relief valves are DIY; anything involving opening the unit needs service. Opening it yourself may void the warranty.
Prevention
- Inspect joints for water marks yearly.
- Drain the tank before sub-zero winters if unused.
